Cotton vs Polyester for Hoodies: A Factory Lab Breakdown

# Cotton vs Polyester for Hoodies: What Our Fabric Library Tells Buyers You’ve got a hoodie design ready. Two fabric quotes land on your desk: one from a cotton spinner, one from a polyester mill. Landed cost differs by maybe 15%. Sampling lead-times are close. But your production timeline is tight, and the last time you trusted a “premium” cotton supplier, the first shipment pilled after two washes. That’s the kind of headache we hear every week from brand founders and Amazon sellers who reach out to us at our Zhejiang factory. We’ve been running looms here for over 20 years, and our fabric library holds over 800 archived swatches. So when a buyer asks “cotton vs polyester for hoodies,” we don’t hand them a marketing sheet. We pull the lab data, lay out the GSM vs cost trade-offs, and show them what happens to each fiber under a Martindale abrasion test. This article is that briefing. No fluff. Just the numbers we use on our own floor to decide which fabric goes into a run. --- ## Fiber basics Let’s start with what the raw fibers actually do inside a hoodie. We handle both materials daily, and we’ve seen each one fail or succeed depending on the buyer’s end use. **Cotton** is a short-staple natural fiber. When you spin it into yarn for a hoodie, you get a soft, breathable fabric that absorbs moisture — up to 27% of its weight before it feels wet. That’s great for low-activity wear, but it becomes a liability when the wearer sweats. Cotton holds the moisture against the skin, which can drop body temperature in cool weather. On our floor, we see cotton shrinking 3% to 5% in the first wash if the fabric isn’t pre-shrunk. We pre-shrink all our cotton jersey and fleece, but that adds a step and a little cost. **Polyester**, on the other hand, is a hydrophobic synthetic. It wicks moisture away from the skin and dries fast — about 60% faster than cotton in our internal drying tests at 40°C. Polyester also resists shrinking (typically under 1% dimensional change after wash). But it’s less breathable than cotton, and some buyers complain about a “plastic” feel in low-quality poly fabrics. That’s a yarn quality issue, not a fiber problem. We use higher-denier textured yarns in our hoodie runs to soften the hand feel. Key structural difference: cotton fibers have a natural crimp that traps air, giving it good insulating properties when dry. Polyester fibers are uniform and smooth, which means they can be woven or knitted into tighter, lighter fabrics that still hold warmth. Our QC team measures thermal resistance (clo value) on every fabric we approve. For a 300 GSM cotton fleece, clo is about 0.80. A 280 GSM polyester fleece matches that at 0.78, while being 20 grams lighter per square meter. --- ## Performance comparison table Here’s the raw data from our lab. We tested three common hoodie fabrics: 100% cotton fleece (300 GSM), 100% polyester fleece (280 GSM), and a 65/35 cotton-poly blend (280 GSM). All knitted on the same circular machine, dyed in the same batch, washed once per AATCC 135 standard. | Property | 100% Cotton (300 GSM) | 100% Polyester (280 GSM) | 65/35 Cotton-Poly (280 GSM) | |----------|----------------------|--------------------------|------------------------------| | **GSM** | 300 ± 5 | 280 ± 3 | 280 ± 4 | | **Stretch (lengthwise)** | 22% | 34% | 28% | | **Stretch (widthwise)** | 18% | 30% | 24% | | **Pilling (Martindale, 1000 cycles)** | Rating 2 (moderate pilling) | Rating 4-5 (minimal pilling) | Rating 3-4 (light pilling) | | **Shrinkage (1st wash)** | 3.5% length, 3% width | 0.8% length, 0.5% width | 1.8% length, 1.5% width | | **Moisture wicking (vertical strip test, 30 min)** | 2 cm | 12 cm | 7 cm | | **Cost per yard (FOB, our mill)** | $4.80 | $3.90 | $4.20 | The table tells a clear story: polyester wins on stretch, pilling resistance, and moisture management. Cotton wins on that natural hand feel and drape. The blend sits in the middle — good enough for most casual hoodies, but not ideal for performance wear. --- ## Cost & MOQ impact Let’s talk real numbers. In our factory, we price based on fabric weight, yarn count, and dyeing method. We don’t do trade — we own the knitting, dyeing, cutting, and sewing lines. That lets us keep costs tighter than a trader can. For a 100% cotton hoodie in 300 GSM, our base price is about **$8.50 per unit** for a 500-piece order (size L, standard fit, kangaroo pocket, ribbed cuffs, no zipper). Add $1.20 for a 1-color screen print front logo. For a 100% polyester hoodie in the same weight and quantity, the base drops to **$7.20 per unit**. The difference is in the raw fiber cost and the dyeing process. Polyester requires disperse dyes at 130°C, which uses more energy, but the raw polyester yarn is cheaper than combed cotton ring-spun yarn. The net is about 15% lower cost for poly. **MOQ impact**: We start at **1 piece for sampling**. No minimum on custom orders. That’s not a promotional line — it’s how we’ve operated for 20 years. A startup founder can order one hoodie to test fit and fabric, then scale. For a 300-piece production run, after sample approval, we ship in **4 to 6 weeks**. We can compress that to 3 weeks for an additional 10% rush fee if the fabric is in stock. **Lead-time variance**: Cotton hoodies take longer to finish because we pre-shrink the fabric in a tenter frame before cutting. That adds 2 days. Polyester goes straight from dyeing to cutting. If you’re on a tight Amazon launch calendar, poly is the faster route. **Hidden costs**: Cotton hoodies often require a softening wash (enzyme wash or silicone softener) to achieve that “broken-in” feel. That adds $0.30 per unit. Polyester needs an anti-static finish, which adds $0.15. We include both in our standard finishing, but some mills charge extra. --- ## Which to pick per product This is where we sit down with buyers and go through their actually product plan. Here’s how we guide them: **For gym / training hoodies**: Pick polyester. Your customer sweats. They need wicking, stretch, and durability. Our [/sportswear-manufacturer](/sportswear-manufacturer) page documents a run we did for a fitness brand: 10,000 polyester hoodies, 280 GSM, 4-way stretch. After 20 washes in their test, pilling stayed at rating 4. Cotton would have been at rating 2 by wash 10. **For casual / lifestyle hoodies**: Pick cotton or a blend. If the hoodie is mostly worn at home or over a t-shirt, the breathability and softness of cotton matter more than stretch. We did a 5,000-piece run for a streetwear label using 300 GSM brushed cotton fleece. The buyer wanted that “heft” feel. Cotton delivered. **For brand launches / sample runs**: Start with a blend. 65/35 cotton-poly gives you a lower pilling risk than pure cotton, lower shrinkage, and a hand feel that’s 80% of cotton. It’s also cheaper. You can test the market, then switch to pure cotton or pure poly for the reorder. **For Amazon sellers (FBA direct)**: Go polyester. We pre-label FBA-compliant barcodes and ship directly to Amazon warehouses. One seller we worked with needed 200 units in 4 weeks. We did 280 GSM polyester, 1-color embroidery on the chest, and shipped to their FBA center in 26 days. Cotton would have added 2 weeks minimum due to the pre-shrink step. **For print-on-demand / low-volume brands**: Cotton is simpler for screen printing. Polyester requires a special ink (low-bleed or transfer paper) to prevent dye migration. If you’re doing small runs with multiple art changes, cotton saves setup time. Our [/low-moq-sportswear](/low-moq-sportswear) page has a full breakdown of print methods per fabric. --- ## FAQ ### Which feels more premium? In hand feel, **cotton** wins for most buyers — especially in the 300-320 GSM range with a brushed back. It has a natural softness and weight that signals “quality” to a casual wearer. Polyester can feel smooth and cool, but a low-quality poly (under 200 GSM, flat knit) feels plasticky. However, a high-quality textured polyester (280 GSM, anti-pill finish) can match the hand feel of a mid-range cotton. We often recommend a 65/35 cotton-poly blend for brands that want “premium without the care issues.” ### Which lasts longer? **Polyester**, by a measurable margin. In our Martindale abrasion tests, polyester hoodie fabrics withstand 2.5x the rubbing cycles before showing wear compared to cotton. After 20 industrial washes (40°C, tumble dry), polyester retains 95% of its original tensile strength. Cotton drops to 75%. The real-world difference: a polyester hoodie will outlast a cotton hoodie by roughly 2x in terms of color fade, pilling, and fabric integrity. The trade-off is that polyester doesn’t age “gracefully” — it doesn’t develop that soft worn-in look that some buyers love in cotton. --- **Ready to compare fabrics for your next hoodie run?** We’ll send you swatches, a lab test report, and a landed cost estimate within 24 hours.
