Low MOQ Custom Sportswear: How Small-Batch Ordering Works (Without the 500-Piece Wall)
I have lost count of how many buyers told me their last supplier's minimum was "at least 500." Five hundred pieces of a style you have never tested is not a minimum order — it is a gamble dressed up as a rule. At Alpinario, a Zhejiang factory with over 20 years in activewear, we run the opposite model: **1 piece is enough to start**. Here is how low MOQ sportswear actually works, straight from the production floor.
The Three-Tier Model: 1 / 20 / 100
Low MOQ only helps you if it maps to what you're actually trying to do. We structure it in three tiers:
**1 piece — test reality.** Order any in-stock style, single unit, to judge fabric, stitching, and fit with your own hands before you commit to anything. For how that compares with bulk minimums, see low MOQ vs high MOQ sportswear.
**20 pieces — test your design.** Custom work (your logo, colors, fabric or detail changes) starts at **20 pieces**. This is the quantity where a real production run becomes economical without a warehouse full of risk.
**100 pieces — private label, recommended.** Full private label — logo, care labels, hang tags, packaging, UPC/FBA labels — works from **100 pieces**. It's the recommended starting point for a sellable brand. There is no 500-piece wall anywhere in that ladder. If your design proves out at 20 pieces, you reorder at 100; if 100 sells, you scale to 500. The door stays open at every step.
How a Small Batch Actually Moves Through the Factory
Small orders aren't just "smaller versions" of big ones — the mechanics are different, and a low-MOQ factory has to be built for them.
1. Inquiry & quote (within 24h). You tell us the style, quantity, and customization. We reply with a line-item quote.
2. Sample (7 days).** For custom work we cut your sample within 7 days. The sample fee is **credited against your first bulk order, so sampling isn't a sunk cost.
3. Production.** For stock styles, small batches ship in **3–7 days** because the fabric and patterns already exist. New styles take **7 days sampling + 4–6 weeks production. Because we control our own cutting and sewing lines, a 20-piece order gets a real production run — not leftover fabric pieced together.
4. QC & shipping. Even a 20-piece batch is checked, and we ship DDP to the US, UK, and EU — the price you approve is the price at your door.
Three Cost Levers That Keep Small Batches Affordable
Small batches cost more per piece than bulk — that's physics. Three levers keep the premium down:
**Combine cutters on shared fabric and color.** When several small orders share fabric and shade, we merge cutting schedules onto one lay, spreading setup cost. That is why our 20-piece price sits closer to bulk than most expect.
**Choose the right process, not the cheapest one.** Print instead of embroidery on a small run, or a standard package instead of a custom box, and the per-piece cost drops immediately. We quote alternatives so you can see the trade.
**Cap your SKU explosion.** One style in two colors at 20 pieces beats five styles at 8 each — more units per run, better per-piece pricing.Small Batch ≠ Lower Quality: The QC Floor
The "small batch = leftover seconds" fear is the biggest myth in this space. Quality on a 20-piece order is easier to control, not harder — we can inspect a higher share of units. Larger small-batch runs still get AQL 2.5 (ISO 2859-1, General Inspection Level II, single sampling):

A 500-piece batch, for example, means a 50-piece sample, accept on 2 defects, reject on 3 — the same standard whether you test at 20 or scale at 500.
The Test-and-Scale Path in Practice
A Brazilian brand did exactly this with us (example): they ordered **20 running vests** as a first test, confirmed quality and sell-through, and reordered **500 pieces within three weeks**. If you are budgeting this path from zero, read low MOQ sportswear for startups.
That is the point of low MOQ custom sportswear: it converts "I hope this sells" into "I know this sells, so I'll order more." Start with one piece to feel the fabric, twenty to test your version, a hundred when the numbers agree. If a supplier insists the ladder starts at 500, ask what they're protecting — their inventory, or yours.

FAQ
What does "1 piece MOQ" actually mean?
It means you can order a single unit of an in-stock style to test fabric, fit, and quality before committing to a larger order. Custom designs start at 20 pieces, and full private label is recommended at 100 pieces. No minimum means no guesswork.
Why is the MOQ for custom sportswear 20 pieces?
20 pieces is where a real production run becomes economical — enough units to set up cutting and sewing properly without a warehouse full of unsold inventory. It's a floor, not a wall: you test at 20 and scale up when the design proves out.
Is sample cost refundable?
Our sample fee is **credited against your first bulk order**, so the sample isn't a sunk cost — it becomes part of your paid production once you confirm.
Is small-batch quality worse than bulk?
No. We inspect small batches to the same AQL 2.5 standard (ISO 2859-1) as large ones, and a small batch actually allows a higher share of units to be checked. "Small batch equals seconds" is a myth from factories that only want bulk.
How fast can a low-MOQ order ship?
In-stock styles ship in **3–7 days**. Custom styles take **7 days sampling + 4–6 weeks production**. The speed of small batches comes from existing fabric, patterns, and production tooling — which is exactly what we stock for low-MOQ buyers.
