# Custom Tank Tops Manufacturer: GSM, Stitching, and Print Placement That Actually Matter
The first RFQ we answer on any given morning rarely starts with fabric. It starts with a landed-cost question: "If I ship 800 racerback tanks to a US Amazon warehouse, what is my per-unit cost, and how long is the sampling cycle?" Our answer depends on the full spec — fabric weight, stitch structure, and exactly where the logo sits. Those three decisions decide your price, your reject rate, and your reorder speed. Here is how our floor in Zhejiang builds a custom tank top, item by item.
## Spec sheet for custom tank tops
A tank top looks simple. It is not. The fabric weight, stitch density, and printing placement all interact with your target price point and your end customer's expectations. Below is the spec sheet our tech team uses when we open a new order.
**Fabric weight and composition**
- **140–150 GSM** — Lightweight, high airflow. Works for yoga, indoor training, and summer layering. Pairs best with 100% polyester or 92/8 polyester-spandex.
- **160–170 GSM** — Our most common range for gym and cross-training tanks. It drapes without clinging and holds a print well. At this weight we usually add 5–8% spandex for recovery.
- **180–190 GSM** — Heavier, denser hand feel. Used for outdoor training, "alpha" cuts, and sleeveless hoods. Nylon (锦纶) can be blended here for a smoother, more matte surface.
We dye to Pantone for almost any shade, and our primary material is polyester — nylon is available on request. State your target GSM and composition in the RFQ; the base price shifts roughly USD 0.40–0.90 per garment depending on whether you pick 140 GSM or 190 GSM.
**Stitching standards for tank tops**
- Neck binding: 1×1 rib, 2 cm finished width, cover-stitched. This is the first place a cheap tank shows.
- Hem: twin-needle cover stitch, 2.5 cm allowance. On racerbacks we use a narrow rolled hem at 1.2 cm.
- Side seams: 4-thread overlock, stitch density held at 12–14 stitches per inch. A 5-thread overlock is used where the side seam meets the armhole for extra pull strength.
- Center back label: heat-transfer label or woven label, placed 2.5 cm below the neck binding, folded flat so it does not rub during workouts.
**Print and embroidery placement**
Our default placement template for a standard muscle tank:
- Center front graphic: 5" wide × 2" high, top edge 4" below the neck binding.
- Left chest logo: 3–3.5" wide, top edge 6" below the shoulder point, 2" inside the armhole seam.
- Center back graphic: 8–10" wide, top edge 3" below the collar.
- Racerback tanks: back prints are limited to 6–7" wide because the panel narrows toward the center strap. If the artwork is wider, it will wrap onto the edge and distort during sewing.
Every placement tolerance is ±0.5 cm, and our team confirms placement on a blank garment before bulk sewing starts. If you want to move a logo 1 cm lower, that is a 30-second change in the tech pack, not a production delay.
## Decoration methods compared
Tank tops have less flat surface area than tees, which makes decoration choice more consequential. A heavy embroidery patch on a 140 GSM tank will pucker before it reaches the customer. An all-over sublimation print on a racerback with high spandex content will distort at the stretch points.
Here is how we compare the four decoration methods we run in-house at our [custom sportswear](/custom-sportswear) facility:
| Method | Setup cost | Unit cost (300 pcs) | Best placement on tank tops | Durability note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Screen printing | USD 40–80 per color screen | USD 1.20–2.40 per location | Center chest, center back | Strongest wash fastness; 60+ washes when cured correctly |
| Embroidery | USD 30–45 per design digitizing | USD 1.80–3.00 per location | Left chest or back yoke; keep under 4" wide | Very durable; avoid on 140 GSM fabrics to prevent puckering |
| Heat transfer (烫印) | USD 0–25 per artwork film | USD 0.80–1.80 per location | Small chest logos, center back on racerbacks | 30–50 washes depending on film thickness |
| Sublimation (all-over) | USD 80–120 per design | USD 3.50–6.00 per panel | Full body panel; requires polyester-dominant fabric | Permanent; not recommended above 8% spandex |
Screen printing is still the workhorse for gym brands because of the cost at 300+ pieces. Heat transfer is our default recommendation for first test orders — it has no screen cost and allows you to change artwork between colorways without killing your budget. Sublimation is the right call for all-over camouflage, tie-dye, or paneled geometry, but the fabric must be at least 85% polyester; that restricts your GSM range to 140–170.
For racerbacks specifically, we recommend keeping decoration away from the side seam line. Since racerback cuts often skip side seams entirely, a print that lands too far to one side will appear crooked during wear. Our QC template marks a safe print zone on every pattern before bulk sewing begins.
## Sampling process
Sampling is where most buyer–factory relationships either speed up or stall. We keep the process short and communicate in 24 hours or less, as our [low MOQ sportswear](/low-moq-sportswear) clients expect. Here is the exact sequence:
1. **Send your spec** — artwork (AI or PDF), target GSM, sizes, quantity, and decoration method. If you only have a sketch, send it anyway; our pattern team will digitize it.
2. **Tech pack review and quote — 1–2 days.** We confirm fabric weight, stitching details, and print placement. You receive a fully landed cost breakdown, including FBA labeling if you need it.
3. **Pattern making and fabric dyeing — 2–3 days.** If you need a new Pantone dye lot, we batch-dye the knit before cutting.
4. **Sample sewing and shipment — 3–7 days** from the day the artwork is approved. This timeline is fixed; we have shipped single samples in 4 days when the buyer is under deadline.
5. **Sample review — represented by photos, video, and physical fit.** If you request changes, the revised sample follows in another 3–5 days. Most buyers approve the first or second revision.
6. **Bulk production — 4–6 weeks** for a mid-sized order of 300 pieces after sample approval. We also hold the approved sample as the reference for the entire bulk run.
Sample cost is straightforward: USD 40–80 per style, which covers cutting, sewing, and any single-color decoration. That fee is deducted from your bulk invoice once you place a production order. Alternatively, because our MOQ is 1 piece, you can order a single finished tank at the same spec and treat it as a pre-production sample — no separate sample fee, and you already own a sellable unit.
During sampling, we also verify placement for your wash label, neck label, and hang tag. If your goods are going to an Amazon warehouse, we pre-apply FBA labels and document the shipment at the carton level — no third-party relabeling step in between.
## Bulk QC checkpoints
We do not wait until the end of a production run to discover a problem. Our QC team works against four checkpoints, and each has hard numbers attached.
1. **Incoming fabric inspection.** Every roll is measured against the 4-point system. Any roll exceeding 28 points per 100 square yards is rejected or reworked before cutting. Fabric weight is checked with a GSM balance on three points per roll.
2. **Pre-production meeting.** The approved sample, the print placement template, and the stitch density spec (12–14 SPI) are attached to the production line. The line leader signs off before the first cut.
3. **Inline inspection at 20–30% completion.** We pull 5 pieces per 100 randomly. The key measurements — half chest, body length, and hem width — must hold to a tolerance of ±1 cm, ±1.5 cm, and ±1 cm, respectively. Any print placement beyond ±0.5 cm from the approved template sends the entire batch back for checking.
4. **Final random inspection under AQL 2.5.** For a 300–500 piece lot, we sample 32 pieces and inspect for major and minor defects. Color is matched against your Pantone chip under D65 daylight. Afterward, we apply FBA labels per warehouse if your PO requires it, and pack to the carton quantity you specified.
The most common tank-top defect we catch is twisted side seams in racerbacks — it comes from relaxed knit fabric during cutting. Our floor pre-stacks and rests the cut layers for 12–24 hours before sewing, which pulls that defect rate down to a fraction of the AQL threshold. A tank top might be a small garment, but the attention to detail is the same as any full-zip jacket we run through our [sportswear manufacturer](/sportswear-manufacturer) line.
