Athleisure Apparel Supplier for Startups: Sourcing, Pricing & Reorder Planning
# Athleisure Apparel Supplier for Startups: Sourcing, Pricing & Reorder Planning
You’ve sketched your athleisure line, found a fabric sample you love, and even mocked up a brand logo. Then you hit the wall: landed cost per unit, sampling timelines, and the dreaded minimum order quantity. One factory says 500 pieces per style; another wants a $3,000 sampling fee. Your startup burn rate doesn’t allow that. We get it. That’s why we built our Zhejiang factory around the reality of early-stage brands—MOQ of 1, 3-to-7-day sampling, and production lead times that let you test the market without betting the company.
We’re Alpinario, a 20+ year B2B sportswear manufacturer (not a trading company). We own the floor, the cutting tables, and the QC team. In this article, we walk you through exactly how we work with startups: the sourcing workflow, where the price breaks actually happen, what private label means at the supplier tier, and how to plan reorders so you don’t run out of inventory or cash.
## Sourcing workflow
Most startup founders send us a tech pack or a photo of a garment they like. Within 24 hours we reply with a feasibility check and a rough quote. That’s step one. From there, the workflow splits into six clear stages:
1. **Inquiry & design review** – You send sketches, measurements, or a reference garment. Our pattern team reviews for manufacturability (e.g., seam placement on compression leggings, pocket depth on running shorts). We ask about fabric weight—we typically work with polyester (180–220 GSM for athleisure) and nylon blends. All Pantone colors are available.
2. **Sampling** – We produce a single sample (or multiple if you want to test different fabrics/colors). Sampling takes **3–7 days** from approval of the tech pack. We ship the sample to you via DHL/FedEx. If you need a logo applied, we can do embroidery, screen-printed heat transfer, or woven labels. The sample cost is deducted from your first production order.
3. **Sample approval & revisions** – You receive the sample, try it on, check stitching, fit, and color. We allow up to two rounds of minor revisions (e.g., adjusting inseam by 1 cm, changing thread color). Major design changes start a new sample cycle.
4. **Production order** – Once the sample is approved, you place the order. **No minimum order quantity**—we can produce 1 piece or 10,000. For a typical startup order of 300 pieces, we schedule production within 2–3 days and ship **4–6 weeks** after sample approval. Larger orders (5,000+ pieces) may take 8–10 weeks, but we’ll give you a confirmed timeline.
5. **Quality control** – Our QC team inspects every garment at three points: cutting, sewing, and final packing. We check for loose threads, seam alignment, color consistency, and label accuracy. You receive photos of the finished goods before shipment.
6. **Logistics & FBA prep** – We can affix FBA labels, pack in polybags, and ship directly to Amazon warehouses. We also handle carton marking and commercial invoices. If you ship to your own warehouse, we follow your packing instructions.
This workflow is designed to compress the typical 12-week sourcing cycle into 6–8 weeks for startups. Key numbers: **24-hour response**, **3–7 day sampling**, **4–6 week production** for 300 pieces.
## Price breaks
Let’s talk numbers. Because you’re a startup, you want to know exactly where the unit price drops. We use a tiered pricing model based on order quantity, fabric usage, and trim complexity. Here’s a realistic example for a basic polyester leggings (180 GSM, elastic waistband, no pockets, single color):
| Order Quantity | Unit Price (USD) | Lead Time (from sample approval) |
| -------------- | ---------------- | -------------------------------- |
| 1–50 pieces | $12.50 – $15.00 | 2–3 weeks |
| 51–300 pieces | $8.20 – $10.00 | 4–6 weeks |
| 301–1,000 pcs | $5.90 – $7.50 | 6–8 weeks |
| 1,001–5,000 pcs| $4.30 – $5.50 | 8–10 weeks |
*Prices are estimates and vary by design, fabric, and trim. Contact us for a firm quote on your specific style.*
The biggest price break happens between 50 and 300 pieces—that’s where fabric waste drops and cutting efficiency improves. For a startup, ordering 300 pieces (roughly 6–8 SKUs at 40–50 units each) gives you a price that’s 30–40% lower than a 50-piece order, while keeping your inventory risk manageable.
If you’re an Amazon seller testing a new ASIN, we recommend starting with 100–200 units per color. That puts you in the $8–10 range, which leaves room for Amazon fees and still gives you a healthy margin. For gyms ordering team uniforms, 50–100 pieces per style works well; the unit price is higher, but you avoid excess stock.
We also offer **fabric-hold agreements** for recurring orders. If you commit to a minimum annual volume (e.g., 3,000 pieces across the year), we lock in the first-tier pricing upfront and keep your fabric on hand, reducing reorder lead times to 2–3 weeks.
## Private label at supplier tier
Many startups confuse private label with simply sewing a label into a generic garment. That’s not our approach. When you partner with us, private label means we treat your brand as the only brand on the garment—from the inside out.
**What we cover in private label:**
- **Custom labels:** Woven neck labels, satin care labels, heat-transfer logo prints, or embroidered logos on the chest/waist. We can match your brand font and colors.
- **Hang tags & packaging:** Attach your hang tags, size stickers, and barcode labels. We can polybag each garment individually or bundle them in bulk.
- **Wash & care instructions:** We print your custom care label (with your brand name, RN number, and care symbols) and sew it into the garment.
- **Color matching:** You send a Pantone number or a fabric swatch; we dye to match. We can do solid colors, color blocks, or custom prints (digital or screen).
- **Trim customization:** Zippers, drawcords, mesh panels, reflective piping—all sourced from our approved suppliers and branded with your logo where possible.
**MOQ for private label: 1 piece.** That’s right—you can order a single sample with your label and hang tag to test the market or sell to a local client. Production orders also have no minimum. We’ve delivered batches of 15 pieces for a boutique brand and 12,000 pieces for a national chain.
**Why this matters for startups:** You don’t need to order 500 units to get a custom label. You can start with 50, measure sell-through, and reorder in smaller increments. This keeps your cash flow liquid and your inventory lean.

## Reorder planning
The most common mistake startup founders make is ordering too much upfront, then sitting on slow-moving inventory, or ordering too little and facing stockouts during a campaign. We help you plan reorders so you hit the sweet spot.
**Our reorder planning process:**
- **Data-driven quantity recommendations.** After your first order, we ask for sell-through numbers (if you’re willing to share). Based on your velocity, we suggest reorder quantities that balance your cash flow with lead times. For example, if you sell 50 units of a style every 3 weeks on Amazon, we recommend reordering 150 units every 9 weeks (3x lead time + safety stock).
- **Fabric reservation.** For styles you plan to reorder consistently, we order the fabric in bulk and hold it in our warehouse. This cuts reorder lead time from 4–6 weeks down to **2–3 weeks** because we skip the fabric procurement step. The cost of the fabric is invoiced only when you confirm the reorder.
- **Price stability.** We lock in the unit price for the first reorder (same quantity tier) if you reorder within 90 days. If you increase the quantity, you get the next tier’s price.
- **FBA-specific planning.** If you sell on Amazon, we can pre-label each unit with your FBA barcode and ship directly to Amazon fulfillment centers. We also coordinate with your freight forwarder for consolidated shipments. This saves you the step of receiving and relabeling.
- **Seasonal reorder triggers.** For athleisure, demand peaks in January (New Year resolutions) and September (back-to-school/workout). We recommend placing reorders 6–8 weeks before these peaks. For example, order by mid-November for a January campaign.
**Example timeline:**
- Month 1: Order 200 units (sample + production).
- Month 2: Receive inventory, start selling.
- Month 3: Sell 80 units; reorder 120 units (fabric held).
- Month 4: Receive reorder; continue selling.
- Month 5: Sell another 100 units; reorder 150 units.
This cycle keeps your inventory turnover healthy and avoids tying up capital in dead stock.

## FAQ
**What is the MOQ?**
Our minimum order quantity is **1 piece**, for both samples and production. You can order a single custom garment with your label, logo, and packaging. There is no hidden minimum or step-up quantity.
**What is the sampling timeline?**
Sampling takes **3–7 days** from the time we approve your tech pack or design. We then ship the sample via express courier (DHL, FedEx, UPS), which typically arrives in 2–5 days depending on your location. For urgent projects, we can expedite sampling to 2–3 days (please confirm with us first).
**Do you offer pricing for smaller brands?**
Yes. Our price breaks are based on quantity, not brand size. Even a 50-piece order gets a competitive unit price. We work with many startups, gyms, and Amazon sellers who start with small batches and scale up.
**Can you match Pantone colors?**
Yes. We can match almost any Pantone color for polyester and nylon fabrics. Send us the Pantone number or a physical swatch, and we’ll produce a color sample for approval.
**Do you ship to Amazon FBA?**
Absolutely. We can pre-label each unit with your FBA barcode, pack in polybags, and ship directly to Amazon warehouses. We also handle commercial invoices and carton labels for international shipments.
